As you can imagine as a real estate based technology company we get to see a lot of creative ways that email marketers, phone solicitors, text campaigners and other marketer systems try to reach real estate agents to get you to switch to their products. Claims about improving your website’s SEO because their product has a “truly integrated custom/unique IDX results pages allowing for automated Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and improved rankings” or “we can help with your website’s SEO with unique content” are rampant. They even make statements like your site is blocked from the search engines. (By the way for those of you reading this who are iFoundAgent customers – you already have this feature with being able to create “truly integrated custom/unique IDX results pages…” – and you can make an unlimited amount of these pages/posts for your website giving you the ability to dominate a farming area that you’re passionate about.)
We recently got a call directly from a sales person from iHouseWeb (insert another web development company name here) who told us directly that one of our test websites didn’t have a 3rd party IDX installed. Now you can imagine our humor in hearing this comment since we are an IDX company. He was aggressive and argumentative about it – and was flat-out lying to us. We’re experts at what we do but we can imagine what a call to you like this might sound – how it could create some doubt. We’re sure you are getting calls like this. (Post update – we’ve checked several former client websites who are now with other services and their site load speeds have all gone down by a factor of 5 seconds which is terrible for Google.)
As an aside – we do have customers that cancel like this: “I have had a new website built and am switching over to them today. Please cancel my monthly charge and website.” and “We’re using another company. I’ve liked iFound. Nothing negative at all…just wanted a change.” It’s always fun to get these emails as you can imagine. What’s, even more, fun is when we get emails and phone calls 6, 8…12 months later from those very same people saying that the grass wasn’t greener with this other company and they want to restart their service with us. Cancellations like this in our opinion are typically the result of one of these types of solicitations where the agent was sold something about another system which was unfounded when it came to our system. Solicitors have no idea the power of what’s contain inside your website. In many cases, we have the same features and benefits and more. But the questions weren’t asked and the agent suffered through the change.
Ok, back to the story…
We see emails from spammers all the time going to our clients that say things like – “we can help you rank on the 1st page of Google”. We offer to you that your iFoundAgent already ranks on the front page of Google for something! It can rank more if you do some more incremental work with it.
However – we’re not in the ranking business per se anymore. While our websites and IDX pages rank – we say that the focus for a real estate agent website is misdirected – misleading and detrimental to your business – trying to compete for organic search visitors from Google as the primary reason for having a website is the wrong way to go – in our opinion.
Think about it – how are you ever going to rank for “Scottsdale Homes” or “Scottsdale Real Estate” (inject your city into these phrases) in Google with Zillow/Trulia/with all the major real estate brands all competing for those top 10 spots? Yet this is a large part of the marketing tactic that these companies are using to get your business – they get you hyped by saying they can get you ranked – and it’s just not true.
Yes, you can rank – for longer terms like “homes for sale near Cosmo Dog Park in Gilbert” or “Horse Properties in 85260 for sale”.
