In a recent class I was teaching real estate agents about the basics of SEO – Search Engine Optimization, I was asked the question, “How much should I spend per month on SEO?” When the question was asked there was a general mumble in the room and as I scanned around I could see a lot of frowns. I had a sense that everyone there was waiting for me to quote some approximate number or say something related to what they thought I was there to sell them not unlike the many folks they’ve sat and listened only to get to the sales punch line. I had to stop for a second and think about how to really answer this question. First, I explained - With the changes that Google and the other search engines make to their ranking criteria we have stopped doing any SEO for hire programs for our clients. While there was a time before the great Panda and Penquin updates by Google in 2011 and 2012 doing some backlinking SEO actually provided some good with some effort if you used the right tools. In general, these types of programs were low cost and provided decent results. However, in our experience, unless you are a big company with a lot of money to spend, doing any amount of SEO for hire isn’t really worth you money unless it’s spent optimizing your own site. Next, I explained - The thing that they were ultimately seeking is more leads. When I said that just about every head in the room nodded and I began to see some smiles. At this point, I said – a good SEO company, or web technology company such as IFoundAgent should only go so far as to say they are going to get traffic to your site. However, you (they) as the website owner heard something different – you heard “more leads.” Then, I asked - Think about it, when the conversation about “more traffic” comes up, isn’t it true that you immediately hear is “more leads?” This difference between what’s said – “more traffic” and what you hear, or want: “more leads” is where more dissapointment and arguments happen when it comes to web technology/SEO companies and their clients. You as the website owner pay for “more traffic” with SEO and while you may get more traffic you don’t get “more leads” which makes you mad and distrusting of web technology/SEO companies. With this said, then I asked - Whose responsibility is it to turn traffic into leads? Turning traffic into leads is called conversion and mostly conversion falls on the shoulders of the website owner. Now, there are things that the web design company can do to help traffic convert to leads like calls to action. You can also hire a conversion consultant to help optimize your site for conversion. But beyond the graphics and lead capture forms, in the end, conversion is associated with the content that resides on your website. Content being written text, video, podcasts, pictures to name a few. As a website owner, you have to understand that visitors coming to your site want/need content to engage in to get them to convert into a lead. Without useful compelling content “more traffic” will not mean “more leads” rather – more frustration on your part. In the end, the folks who attended this class left learning about the 5-6 key tips to optimizing their website and that all 5-6 tips were possible to easily implement and control if their website was built using WordPress.
